Ask James Maslow what he wants to be remembered for, and you are not going to get a quick answer.
Not because he has nothing to say. Quite the opposite.
For James, the answer is tied to how he treats people, the choices he makes when nobody is watching, and whether the person he becomes would make his younger self proud.
After thinking it through, he landed on four qualities: honor, loyalty, talent, and kindness.
They are not necessarily the flashiest words. But they say a lot about the man behind the music, the acting roles, and the public version of James fans are used to seeing.
The Four Qualities That Matter Most
The first word James chose was honorable.
He wants to be someone who stands up for what he believes is right, speaks honestly, and at least makes a real attempt to follow his moral compass.
Loyalty came next.
James admits that he has sometimes been loyal to a fault, giving people chance after chance long after they had already shown him who they were. That is something experience has helped him change.
His patience for bad behavior is not what it used to be.
That does not mean he cares less. It means he has learned that loyalty should not require ignoring the truth.
My threshold for acceptable behavior is much smaller than it used to be. I think that’s just part of growing up.
The third quality was being multi-talented.
James wants to be remembered as someone who could genuinely do more than one thing well. Music may be the biggest part of his life right now, but acting, producing, fitness, and creating new projects still matter deeply to him.
Why choose one lane when you are willing to put in the work for several?
And then there was kindness.
Kind Is Not the Same as Nice
James does not think kindness means smiling, making small talk, or telling someone what they want to hear.
Sometimes kindness is direct.
It is telling someone they have something stuck in their teeth instead of letting them walk around with it all day. It is getting to the point instead of pretending to build a friendship because you want a favor.
It is also being able to ask for something and accept “no” without turning it into a problem.
I think it’s fair to ask for anything you want, so long as you are willing to accept no as an answer.
James sees honesty as a form of respect.
You can be polite without being sincere. You can also be blunt without being cruel. For him, real kindness lives somewhere between the two.
It comes from speaking honestly, respecting another person’s time, and seeing them as a human being first.
Thoughts for the future you
One piece of advice James carries with him came from his mentor David Meltzer:
Be kind to your future self.
That means making decisions today that the person you become later will be grateful for.
It could mean taking care of your health, doing the work you have been avoiding, or saying no to something that does not belong in your life anymore.
James also applies that idea to personal growth.
He is proud of the person he has become, and he believes his younger self would be proud too. But he does not see that as a reason to stop learning.
There is always another level to reach, another skill to sharpen, and another part of yourself to understand.

Taking Pieces From the Right People
James does not believe anyone should build their entire life around becoming exactly like one mentor.
Instead, he takes pieces from different people.
David Meltzer has taught him about positivity, open-mindedness, and the value of having conversations without immediately judging the person across from you.
His friend Jaime Camil has shown him what long-term passion looks like. Even after years of success, Jaime still gets excited about a new role. James also admires how Jaime approaches parenting, leading with love before discipline.
Then there is Mike O’Hearn, whose consistency in fitness and acting continues to motivate James. Mike may have started acting later, but he committed to learning the craft and kept showing up.
The people James looks up to are all different.
The connection between them is not their career path. It is the way they combine intelligence, drive, and kindness.
No Mask, No Character
Being more open has not always made life easier, but James says it has made him feel freer.
Fans are going to see more of him soon, including a new YouTube series, more personal content, and music that moves further into the country-pop space.
But the biggest change may be simpler than any new project.
James knows who he is.
He knows what he believes, what he expects from the people around him, and where he wants to put his time and energy.
He does not try to spread himself so thin that nobody receives anything meaningful. He saves his deepest love and effort for his family, close friends, and the fans who continue to show up for him.
That may not please everyone.
It is also completely honest.
